On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a large-scale surprise attack on Israel, initiating one of the most intense escalations of conflict in the region in years. The attack began early in the morning with a barrage of rockets fired from Gaza into Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Simultaneously, Hamas militants crossed into Israeli territory, carrying out attacks on military and civilian targets. This invasion included kidnappings, and reports indicated significant casualties among both civilians and soldiers.
In response, Israel declared a state of war and launched a large-scale military operation against Hamas targets in Gaza, involving airstrikes and mobilization of ground forces. The conflict quickly escalated, leading to heavy casualties on both sides, widespread destruction in Gaza, and increasing concerns about a broader regional conflict.
This attack marked a significant escalation in the long-standing conflict between Israel and Hamas and triggered international reactions, including calls for ceasefires and appeals for humanitarian aid for those affected.
The series of attacks were some of the deadliest in Israeli history and saw 4,300 rockets launched into the country. Hamas fighters invaded the country via vehicles and powered power gliders breaching the Israel-Gaza barrier. Hamas fighters attacked military bases and massacred civilians in 21 communities.
The attacks saw 1,139 people killed including 695 Israeli civilians, 71 foreign nationals and 373 members of the security forces. The biggest attack was seen at the Nova music festival which saw 364 civilians killed.
A year on, the conflict continues to rage with thousands losing their lives and 97 hostages still unaccounted for. 1 year later the conflict is no closer to being resolved and remains at the centre stage of international politics.
