ADHD: Medication shortages have 'profound effect' on patients

Ryan Hendry, 30, describes the daily anxiety of facing shortages in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication as akin to a “doomsday clock,” with about two weeks’ supply left. The Department of Health (DoH) expects to resolve the UK-wide disruption by September. Consultant paediatrician Dr Matthew McConkey emphasises the significant impact of shortages on patients. Ryan recounts the stress of counting down his remaining medication, feeling panic and frustration as pharmacies struggle to provide information on restocking.

He emphasises the importance of maintaining a consistent supply once the right medication is found, highlighting the severe effects of withdrawal, including agitation, memory loss, and migraines. Ryan underscores the urgency of the situation, expressing concern over the lack of seriousness ADHD often receives and the potential for hospitalisation if medication is abruptly discontinued.

Wow, that sounds really stressful! I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to deal with medication shortages. How are people like Ryan coping with the anxiety and symptoms during these shortages? And what measures can be taken to ensure a more reliable supply of ADHD medication in the future?
