An epilepsy drug: A new way to treat osteoarthritis pain?

Osteoarthritis is a chronic and painful condition that hinders specific movements, posing challenges in its management. Recent research has identified a sodium channel, Nav1.7, present in neurones and cartilage cells, as a potential target for alleviating pain and reducing joint damage caused by osteoarthritis.

The study suggests that inhibiting this sodium channel, achieved through the drug Carbamazepine commonly used to treat epilepsy, could be effective in treating osteoarthritis. Despite advancements in modern medicine, managing chronic conditions like osteoarthritis remains a complex task, and ongoing research aims to discover ways to halt joint damage and improve pain symptoms.
