Biodeuteration Support Scientist Summer Placement
The ISIS Neutron and Muon source’s Biology Laboratories focus on providing facilities for scientists and researchers to analyze biosamples such as cells, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. A summer placement opportunity is available for individuals with backgrounds in Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, or Biomedical sciences.
Project Overview: Deuteration in Living Cells
Objective:
The placement involves establishing a protocol for producing deuterated recombinant proteins at the ISIS Neutron and Muon source. Specifically, the student will work on producing deuterated green fluorescent protein (dGFP), which serves as a model for optimizing and troubleshooting deuterated protein purification techniques.
Collaboration with CLF:
The dGFP will be used in collaboration with the Central Laser Facility (CLF) to investigate quantum effects in biological materials, exploring isotopic effects through time-resolved spectroscopies.
Potential Outcomes:
If successful, the project may result in a scientific publication and provide a deuterated standard for visiting users at both ISIS and CLF.
Responsibilities and Requirements:
Responsibilities:
- Developing working protocols for deuterated recombinant GFP production.
- Creating protocols for deuterated algae biomass production.
- Developing purification protocols for deuterated recombinant GFP using various techniques.
- Characterizing deuterated recombinant proteins using methods like gel electrophoresis and spectroscopies.
- Actively participating in experimental design, analysis, and troubleshooting.
- Ensuring the safety and functionality of the ISIS Biology Laboratories.
Requirements:
- Full-time university student returning to complete an undergraduate degree.
- Right to live and work in the UK for the placement duration.
- Laboratory experience, especially in Life Sciences.
- Enjoyment of laboratory work, excellent practical skills, and an understanding of Health and Safety in the Laboratory.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience with live cell culturing.
- Experience in recombinant protein production in E.coli.
- Experience in writing COSHH forms and conducting Risk Assessments.
