Starting from September 2025, British Sign Language (BSL) will become a GCSE subject in England, allowing all pupils to learn around 1,000 signs and promoting inclusivity. The curriculum is currently under review by Ofqual after a public consultation. This move follows BSL’s official recognition as a language in the UK. Advocates, including the National Deaf Children’s Society and Daniel Jillings, a deaf teenager, have long campaigned for this change. Challenges remain regarding training BSL-fluent teachers and ensuring sustainable recruitment. Overall, this step represents a significant milestone in acknowledging BSL’s cultural importance and enhancing inclusivity in education.
