Considering a career in the army? Why not look beyond the British Army?

As a British citizen, you can work for several foreign armies, but eligibility depends on factors like bilateral agreements, dual citizenship, language skills, background checks, and the type of service (e.g., regular forces vs. foreign legion-style units). Here are some of the notable options:

:france: French Foreign Legion
• Open to foreigners of all nationalities (including British).
• No need to speak French initially (you’ll learn during service).
• Must be between 17.5 and 39.5 years old, physically fit, and free of serious criminal convictions.
• Offers a path to French citizenship after several years of service.

:united_states: United States Armed Forces
• Generally only open to U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents (Green Card holders).
• However, British dual nationals or Green Card holders may apply.
• Some exchange programs or specialist roles (e.g. linguists, medics) may accept foreign nationals in rare circumstances, usually with security clearance barriers.

:canada: Canadian Armed Forces
• Open to Canadian citizens.
• Permanent residents may be accepted in certain roles, but it’s very competitive.
• British citizens may apply if they have permanent residency or dual citizenship.
• Some special fast-tracks exist for veterans of other militaries, including the British Army.

:australia: Australian Defence Force
• Primarily for Australian citizens.
• British citizens with prior military service may be eligible to transfer under the Overseas Lateral Transfer Program (must have specific skills and experience).
• Must pass medical, security, and language assessments.

:new_zealand: New Zealand Defence Force
• Accepts foreign nationals with prior military experience, particularly from Commonwealth countries.
• Lateral transfer programs exist for British ex-service personnel.
• Must meet physical, health, and character standards.

:ireland: Irish Defence Forces
• Generally requires EU/EEA citizenship or Irish residency.
• British citizens may still apply post-Brexit, particularly due to the Common Travel Area agreement.
• Fluency in English and a clean record are key.

:guam: Gurkha Contingents & Other Special Forces
• The Singapore Police Force and Army have units like the Gurkhas, but these typically recruit from Nepal, not the UK.
• Some Gulf states (e.g., Oman, UAE) employ foreign military advisors or contractors, often ex-British officers or NCOs.
