Considering a gap year? Here are some things to consider

As a final year student who has decided to take a gap year to travel after I graduate, I went through a period where I wondered whether this was a wise decision, Ultimately, the decision is yours. But if you’re giving it some consideration, I’ve put together a list of things to think about if you’re weighing the option of taking a gap year:

  1. Clarify Your Goals: Reflect on your reasons for considering a gap year. Are you seeking to gain work experience, travel, volunteer, or explore new interests? Clarifying your goals will help you make informed decisions about how to structure your gap year.
  2. Plan Your Gap Year Activities: Outline the activities you intend to pursue during your gap year. Research potential job opportunities, volunteer programs, internships, travel destinations, or educational experiences that align with your interests and goals.
  3. Consider Financial Implications: Evaluate the financial implications of taking a gap year. Determine how you will finance your gap year activities, including living expenses, travel costs, and any educational or training programmes you plan to undertake. Explore funding options such as scholarships, grants, savings, or part-time work.
  4. Develop Transferable Skills: Identify opportunities to develop transferable skills during your gap year that will enhance your employability and future academic pursuits. Focus on building skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership through your gap year activities.
  5. Maintain Personal Growth: Use your gap year as a time for personal growth and self-discovery. Take time to explore your interests, passions, and values, and engage in activities that challenge you intellectually, emotionally, and culturally.
  6. Stay Organised: Create a detailed plan and timeline for your gap year activities, including application deadlines, travel arrangements, and financial budgeting. Stay organised and proactive in managing your gap year plans to ensure a smooth and successful experience.
  7. Seek Guidance and Support: Consult with academic advisors, career counsellors, mentors, and peers to gain insights and advice on planning your gap year.
  8. Evaluate Long-Term Impact: Consider the potential long-term impact of taking a gap year on your academic and career trajectory. Assess how your gap year experiences will contribute to your personal and professional development and whether they align with your overall life goals and aspirations.

i think a gap year is a great decision only if you have a high level of self discipline !

Knowing myself, i would never be able to go through a gap year. I’m just so in need to always work and do something, that willingly taking a year to take a break seems impossible to me😅

I am the same… I like to keep busy, so I’m sure I’ll be looking for volunteering opportunities whilst I’m travelling too!!

Taking a gap year is a big decision! Your list is super comprehensive. Did you already decide on the specific activities you want to pursue during your gap year, or are you still in the planning phase?

I agree; not one you can make lightly! I have some stuff planned for the first months, so volunteering at a surf hostel in Costa Rica (so will have time off to continue learning to surf too!) and then have a few routes planned out for where I’d like to go in South America. Also working in a school in Patagonia, who are looking for Welsh teachers which I still find amazing that there is still a part of the world outside of Wales who speak Welsh!!
