Crafting your CV: Tips for Sports Science Students

It’s that time of year where some of you may be applying for placements or internships. Whilst this can be stressful, know that with a well-written CV, you can confidently showcase your skills and passions to potential employers.

Here are some tips for crafting your CV:

  1. Contact Information: Start with your name, email, and phone number. Ensure your email address is appropriate (not the one with your nickname, that you set up when you were 14 ) If you have a LinkedIn profile or a professional online portfolio, provide the link to showcase your digital presence.

  2. Objective Statement: Write a concise, targeted objective statement that reflects your career goals and how you intend to contribute to the sports science field. You can say a little about yourself and where your passion lies.

  3. Education: Highlight your educational background, including GCSEs / A Levels. Include your university, degree, graduation date, and any relevant additional awards.

  4. Experience: Emphasise any part-time jobs, volunteer work or work experience that may be relevant. Detail your responsibilities, accomplishments, and skills gained.

  5. Skills: Showcase both technical and soft skills. Technical skills may include data analysis software, laboratory techniques, or statistical analysis. Soft skills encompass teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

  6. Projects: If you’ve worked on any projects, describe your involvement and the outcomes achieved.

  7. Achievements: Mention any academic, sporting, or other relevant successes, You can also include a small section on other interests to reveal a little more about yourself!

  8. Formatting: Ensure your CV is well-organised, easy to read, and free of errors. Use a professional font and maintain consistent formatting throughout.

  9. Tailored Content: Customize your CV for each job application by emphasising skills and experiences relevant to the specific role.

  10. References: You don’t have to list these on your CV, but make sure to include references upon request

Your CV is your first impression on potential employers, so make it count! Tailor it to your unique experiences and skills, and don’t forget to convey your passion for sports science
