Different cyber security roles

Given the range of threats in cyber space, a range of positions have appeared to combat and counteract these threats. Here we will look at some of the different positions.

  • Penetration tester - this role, also sometimes called ethical hacker or white hat hacker, aims to discover vulnerabilities in the system through various tools and cyber security methods, in order to report them and strengthen the system

  • Threat intelligence analyst - collates and analyses data on various cyber threats, presenting actionable insights on the moving threat landscape

  • Cyber forensics investigator - investigates and analyses potential, ongoing and previous cyber attacks, identifying their origins and the weaknesses that were exploited

  • Strategist and policy maker and security architects - responsible with developing the cyber security mechanisms and systems to protect their organisation against cyber threats

  • Information security analyst - this position covers a range of previously mentioned roles, including monitoring for breaches, testing for potential vulnerabilities and collaborating with non IT teams and stakeholders

  • First responders - deal with active cyber attacks as they occur

  • Cryptographers - keep data secure through various methods including encryption
