A former employee of a well-known law firm faced consequences from the regulator after a football match incident. Nicholas Galloway, who used to work at CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang, was involved in a scuffle at Hillsborough stadium during Sheffield Wednesday’s FA Cup match against Newcastle in January 2023.
Galloway, who was drunk and couldn’t remember what happened, got into a fight with a steward, causing injuries. He spent the night in jail and later pleaded guilty to assault. As a result, he had to do unpaid work, stay away from alcohol, pay compensation, and got banned from the stadium for five years.
The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) said Galloway’s actions were bad for the legal profession’s reputation. But they decided on a written warning instead of a harsher punishment because they saw it as a one-time thing. They noted that Galloway showed remorse and wasn’t likely to do it again. Galloway had worked at CMS since 2017 but left the firm the year before. He also had to pay some costs.
