Going into law technology

This is for both law students and computer science students. Law technology refers to the usage of technology in the practice of law, to aid and assist legal practitioners in preparation of documents and evidence, reaching and supporting decisions, etc. Many law firms are increasingly integrating different law tech solutions, which provides plenty of opportunities for interested computer science students. Here are some ways to get into law tech:

  • Familiarising one’s self with current tools, such as Harvey.ai - this is a good and simple way to become acquainted with currently used solutions

  • Interning or getting into a graduate scheme - will provide valuable knowledge and experience

  • Attend relevant events, such as seminars, workshops, the law tech society at your university - this is a great way to meet people in the industry, network, exchange ideas and seize opportunities

  • Take online courses - they show initiative and a desire to learn these new skills, and can be shown on LinkedIn and your CV

  • Take legal technology masters courses - some universities offer masters courses in law tech

  • Read relevant articles, papers and other publications - this is a good way to both become more acquainted to this subfield and its practices, and to gain more insight
