Great Ormond Street reviews 700 children treated by ex-surgeon

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is conducting an urgent review of over 700 patients treated by former consultant surgeon Yaser Jabbar after concerns were raised about his work. Of the 39 cases reviewed so far, 22 children have experienced harm, with 13 suffering severe, potentially life-long injuries. These harms include nerve and muscle damage, unnecessary surgeries, and even an amputation. GOSH has contacted all affected families and apologized, promising transparency and continued communication. The review, initiated after concerns from families and staff, is expected to last 18 months.

Wow, this is such a heartbreaking situation, especially when children are involved. It’s really concerning that so many patients may have been harmed. I wonder, how can hospitals better ensure that concerns about a surgeon’s practices are addressed sooner to avoid situations like this in the future? Do you think there should be stricter monitoring or reporting systems in place?
