I don’t know about you, but all these deadlines are making me feel a little overwhelmed. So, I’ve taken this weekend to reset. It just so happens that I also have the weekend off training; so I decided to really let my body and mind recover.
It can be easy to overdo it when we have lots of deadlines, but switching off from university work, especially when facing numerous deadlines, is crucial for several reasons:
- Mental Well-being: Constantly focusing on deadlines and academic responsibilities can lead to burnout and increased stress levels. Taking breaks allows your mind to rest and recharge, promoting overall mental well-being.
- Enhanced Productivity: Working non-stop can diminish productivity over time. Taking breaks and allowing yourself time to relax can improve focus and concentration when you return to your work, ultimately making you more productive in the long run.
- Creativity Boost: Stepping away from your academic tasks can stimulate creativity. Engaging in leisure activities or hobbies can spark new ideas and perspectives that may not have emerged while solely focusing on your coursework.
- Balanced Lifestyle: A healthy balance between academic work and personal life is essential for overall happiness and fulfilment. Taking time for yourself allows you to maintain relationships, pursue interests outside of academia, and enjoy life beyond the confines of university.
- Physical Health: Prolonged periods of sitting and studying can take a toll on your physical health. Taking breaks gives you the opportunity to move your body, stretch, and engage in physical activity, promoting better physical health and reducing the risk of health issues associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
- Improved Sleep: Stress and anxiety related to deadlines can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to fatigue and decreased cognitive function. Switching off from university work before bedtime and engaging in relaxation techniques can improve sleep quality and overall well-being.
While it may seem counterintuitive to take breaks when facing numerous deadlines, doing so is essential for maintaining mental and physical health, enhancing productivity, and achieving a balanced lifestyle. Prioritise self-care and make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, even during busy periods at university
