How to Apply for a Schengen Visa in the UK: A Guide for Students in Need

1. What is a Schengen Visa?

A Schengen visa allows you to enter, stay, and travel freely within the Schengen Area for a short stay, typically up to 90 days within a 180-day period. It is a short-term visa, ideal for tourism, business trips, and visiting family or friends. If you are a student in the UK and you plan to visit any of the countries in the Schengen Area, this is the visa you will need.

2. Who Needs a Schengen Visa?

As a student in the UK, if you are not from an EU or EEA country, you will likely need to apply for a Schengen visa before traveling to the Schengen Area. Some non-EU/EEA nationalities may be exempt from requiring a visa for short stays, so it’s important to check if your country of origin requires one.

3. How to Apply for a Schengen Visa from the UK

Step 1: Determine Where to Apply

The country you will spend the most time in during your visit (known as your main destination) is where you should submit your visa application. If you plan to visit multiple Schengen countries but will spend equal time in each, you should apply to the embassy or consulate of the country of your first entry.

In the UK, Schengen visa applications are usually processed through the consulates of individual countries or through external service providers like TLScontact, VFS Global, or BLS International, depending on the country you are applying to.

Step 2: Gather the Required Documents

Each country’s embassy may have slightly different requirements, but generally, the following documents will be required:

  • A valid passport: Must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen Area.
  • Visa application form: Complete and sign the visa application form for the relevant Schengen country.
  • Passport-sized photos: Two recent passport-sized photographs that meet Schengen visa photo requirements.
  • Proof of student status: A letter from your UK university or college confirming your enrollment and the course you’re studying.
  • Travel itinerary: This can include flight bookings and accommodation reservations for your time in the Schengen Area.
  • Proof of sufficient funds: Bank statements for the last three months, proof of scholarship, or a letter of financial support to show you can cover the costs of your trip.
  • Travel insurance: Proof of travel insurance that covers medical emergencies with a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros for the entire Schengen area.
  • Visa fee: The standard Schengen visa fee is around €80 for adults. Some countries offer discounted fees for students.

Step 3: Book Your Visa Appointment

Once you have gathered all the necessary documents, you will need to book an appointment at the consulate or visa center. It is advisable to schedule your appointment at least 15 days before your intended travel date, but no more than 6 months in advance (9 months for seafarers).

Step 4: Attend Your Visa Appointment

At your appointment, you will submit your application and biometric data (fingerprints and a photo). Be prepared to answer questions regarding the purpose of your trip, your travel plans, and your financial situation.

Step 5: Wait for Your Visa Processing

The processing time for a Schengen visa typically takes 15 calendar days, although it can be longer in certain circumstances. During this time, the consulate may contact you for additional information or documents. It is essential to apply early to account for any potential delays.

Step 6: Receive Your Visa

Once your visa is approved, you will be notified, and you can pick up your passport from the visa application center or have it sent back to you. Make sure to check the details on your visa carefully (including dates, number of entries, etc.) to ensure everything is correct.

This is so useful! I know getting my UK visa in the US was a pain and hopefully it’s faster here, but always make sure you have ample time before you travel when you apply!
