‘It’s disturbing’: the rise in UK children wanting anti-ageing products

Children, influenced by social media, particularly platforms like TikTok and Instagram, are increasingly requesting high-end skincare products, according to parents. The Christmas wishlists of some children, as young as nine, now include expensive eye creams, anti-ageing serums, and oils seen on social media. Dermatologists express concern, warning that these adult-targeted products could harm children’s sensitive skin. Some parents are troubled by the pressure placed on young people to look perfect, fearing it could impact self-esteem. The social component of sharing beauty interests with friends and the appeal of product packaging also contribute to this trend. Parents emphasise the need for moderation and express worry about children feeling compelled to use products they don’t actually need.

How do you think parents can navigate these influences while promoting a healthy self-image in their children?

It’s concerning to see the influence of social media on children’s preferences, especially when it comes to skincare products. Parents should having open conversations with their children about the realities of skincare, emphasizing the importance of age-appropriate products and the potential risks associated with adult-targeted items. Encouraging a positive self-image rooted in individuality rather than societal standards could also play a significant role.

It’s a delicate balance, but maintaining communication and instilling a sense of self-worth beyond external appearances could make a difference.

Having a conversation like that with your children is a must have. Teaching kids the realities of the world, and that social media isn’t as truthful as it may seem, is crucial. Everyone needs to understand the toxicity and falsehood of social media, especially younger people
