Kent patient tracking system frees up nurses' time

The Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham implemented a new electronic bed management system, which utilizes wristbands for patients upon admission. These wristbands automatically update the system upon discharge, facilitating real-time alerts for bed cleaning and streamlining the allocation of beds. Since its introduction in October 2023, the system has significantly reduced bed turnaround times and saved 161 days of ‘wasted’ bed time, freeing up 1,500 hours a month for clinical staff to focus on patient care. Matron Charlotte Flannery clarified that the system isn’t a GPS tracker but simply indicates bed occupancy. While there were initial concerns among staff, the hospital is actively addressing issues and striving to improve the system’s functionality.
