Lord Chancellor Alex Chalk recently defended the government’s stance on illegal migration during a meeting with his counterparts in the G7 alliance. He emphasized the importance of international law evolving with the times rather than remaining stagnant.
Chalk’s comments come amid ongoing debate over legislation passed in April allowing the deportation of asylum seekers to Rwanda. Critics, including the Council of Europe, have raised significant concerns about the human rights implications of the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill.
During the summit of justice ministers in Venice, Chalk stressed the need for international law to adapt to the complexities of the modern world. He highlighted that our nations face new challenges, such as mass migration, climate change, and advancements in technology like AI.
Chalk concluded by urging the group of nations to collectively consider the future direction of international law, emphasizing the importance of ongoing dialogue and adaptation in response to global challenges.
