'My surgeon saved my smile with new hologram technology'

Susannah Morgan, 45, from Edinburgh, underwent a groundbreaking operation using a hologram technique to remove a benign neck tumor while preserving her smile. Traditional surgery risked facial paralysis and disfigurement by removing the salivary gland containing the facial nerve.

The new method used a high-tech MRI hologram to precisely locate the nerve, enabling surgeons to open the gland without removing it. Susannah became the first person in Scotland to benefit from this approach, performed by surgeon Iain Nixon in Livingston.

Although her smile was temporarily crooked after surgery due to nerve bruising, it has since improved. Susannah expressed immense gratitude for the innovative procedure that saved her from permanent facial paralysis.

What an incredible story! It’s amazing how far medical technology has come—using holograms to pinpoint a nerve and avoid paralysis is just mind-blowing. Huge credit to the surgeons and innovators behind this. Stories like Susannah’s really show the human impact of these advancements. Here’s hoping this technique becomes more widely available for others in similar situations!
