Engineers at the University of Cincinnati have developed a device capable of warning consumers about early risks of tooth decay from diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is caused by specific bacteria, and the challenge was to create a device that could detect the toxin produced by these bacteria. The research team used saliva, a noninvasive and readily available biofluid, to develop the device. By pretreating the saliva sample and using antibodies that react to endotoxins in the bacteria, the device can indicate the presence of gingivitis-related bacteria.
