Dr. John Jumper, a co-winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on protein structure with AlphaFold, visited King’s College London a day after the prize announcement. AlphaFold, an AI system developed by DeepMind, predicts the 3D structures of proteins from amino acid sequences, advancing research on health, disease, and drug interactions. During his talk, Dr. Jumper shared insights with students, discussing the whirlwind of winning the prize and the future of AI in biological research. His lecture inspired attendees, particularly those in the EPSRC DRIVE-Health program, which trains health data scientists. The program, led by Professors Richard Dobson and Vasa Curcin, is the UK’s first to integrate cross-sector collaboration in health data science. Dr. Jumper’s seminar highlighted AlphaFold’s role in advancing scientific research and its potential to do more with limited data. His talk was part of a series welcoming a new cohort of DRIVE-Health students.
