NHS services are supposed to be free of charge – so why aren’t they?

The blog discusses the disparity between the NHS constitution’s principle of free access to services based on clinical need and the reality faced by individuals. It highlights issues such as a shortage of NHS dentists leading to DIY dentistry and charges for basic care even if registered with an NHS dentist.

The cost of prescriptions, eye appointments, and spectacles in England is also mentioned, with technological advances potentially worsening the situation. It emphasises the impact on poorer individuals and argues for increased vigilance in resisting charges for basic healthcare, suggesting that England should consider following the lead of Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland in reducing or eliminating certain charges.

Do you believe there should be a shift in policy to align more closely with the original vision of the NHS?
