Rishi Sunak promises to offer English farmers ''largest ever'' grant scheme

Rishi Sunak is set to unveil the “largest ever” grant scheme for farmers, along with the creation of a food security index, in response to concerns about the impact of Brexit trade deals, flooding, and rising costs on England’s ability to feed itself. The grant offer, totaling £427m, includes funding for technology and productivity schemes. Sunak will address farmers’ calls for a commitment to maintain or exceed the current food self-sufficiency level of around 60%. The announcement comes amid unrest in the agricultural sector, with farmers protesting environmental regulations and perceived lack of support. The Food Security Index, to be published at the next Farm to Fork summit, aims to monitor the country’s food security. The move follows criticism of post-Brexit farming policies by National Farmers’ Union president Minette Batters, who highlighted broken promises and challenges facing the industry.
