Should you stick to tech work for a particular industry?

Most industries heavily use tech, banks use fintech to manage your money, the aviation industry use avionics to enhance air travel, hospitals use medtech to deliver life saving services. You, as a computer scientist, whether a programmer, data analyst, software developer or other professional, can apply your skills to a wide range of industries, however, would it be a good idea to stick to one industry?

Why it may be a good idea

When most of your work is geared to one particular industry, you will become better acquainted with the industry as a whole, not just the tech that it works with. You will better understand the terminology, the culture and the people in the industry. This can be absolutely advantageous, as you can better tailor the subsequent tech solutions to better fit the industry.

By spending more time in the industry, it is natural that you will better understand how the industry works. For example, if you work in fintech, you may not understand investment banking greatly in depth, to the level of someone who has studied finances at undergraduate for example, but you will be much better acquainted and understanding in the field.

In terms of your career, when moving between different jobs in the field, employers may be more inclined to take you do to your knowledge and prior experience in the field. Even if there may be other people who have more experience in general, it may be more difficult to train them to adapt their work for that specific industry.

That’s really interesting! It makes sense that specializing in one industry could provide deeper insights and more tailored solutions. I’m curious, though, do you think there are any downsides to focusing on just one industry as a tech professional? How do you balance the benefits of specialisation with the need for versatility in a rapidly evolving tech landscape?

Good question, given mass layoffs affecting particular industries, finding a job in that industry will be consequently more difficult. However, I don’t think that going into tech for another industry will be much more difficult due to extensive experience in one particular industry. The skills will still transfer over, even if you may not have as much domain knowledge.

At the same time, some employers from other industries may potentially have concerns over whether you will be able to adapt to working for tech in a different industry.

As for balancing specialisation and versatility, the range of technologies and skills used and needed isn’t necessarily a problem, as these are more transferable. I think it’s more about being able to adapt to different working environments and domains.

Given the benefits of specializing in a specific industry as a computer scientist, what strategies would you recommend for someone who wants to transition into a new industry after gaining extensive experience in one particular sector?
