Something that is very important for a politics / international relations / social science student is staying up to date with various developments around the world. This is important so that your knowledge base is constantly informed, and so that you can better grasp how situations and events originate and culminate, how they progress and how they may conclude. Here are some sources to stay up to date:

  • International Crisis Group - this non-profit NGO monitors conflicts and potentially hostile developments globally, monitoring and reporting on various events and unfolding situations, as well as advising policy makers

  • Seerist - a geopolitical risk management firm who also have their own software platforms which monitor and analyse a range of sources to deliver insights and analysis, also release their own analysis on different situations

  • Financial Times - a business newspaper which cover a range of stories discussing different industries and global politics

  • Chatham House, also known as Royal Institute of International Affairs - one of the leading think tanks in the UK, they publish high quality reports and publications on a wide range of different topics, including but not limited to terrorism, energy transitions and technology governance

  • Harvard International Review - offers the perspectives and insights of scholars, academics, policy makers and heads of states, on a range of different current issues, categorised by region

  • RAND Corporation - this is a research corporation that publishes high quality peer reviewed research on a wide range of different areas, to assist with and guide policy

  • The Institute for Security Studies - an independent organisation which aims to promote peace in Africa as well as other parts of the world, they research conflicts, governance, peacekeeping, peacebuilding and security in general, advising on such issues and assisting with security policy to mitigate current potential hostilities

  • International Institute for Strategic Studies - publishes research and analysis on different current issues and different regions, also maintain maps and databases, they advise and guide policy making in the area of security
