The different possibilities for masters

There are many good reasons to take a masters, there are also many options to take. While some masters are in politics, international relations, economics, etc, there are other masters which aim to go more in depth in certain aspects and specialisations. Here are some of them:

  • Political Economy and International Political Economy - these terms refer to the influence that politics has on economics and vice versa, it looks in depth at how the two fields interact and the various practices and applications associated with them, such as: environment and climate, energy politics, supply chains, economic policy, etc.

  • Public policy - this concerns the study of how governments, civil services and public bodies develop policy and regulation, studying their formation, considerations, evaluation, subsequent application

  • Security studies - considers various aspects of security, such as counter terrorism, counter proliferation, geopolitical developments, changing warfare, etc, analyses their causes and propagation, and looks at how various groups seek to mitigate security threats

  • Masters with specialisation in certain regions - typically in politics, economics, etc, with in depth examination of a certain region, looks at how the culture and society of those areas influence the economic and political state

  • Environment and climate oriented courses - usually politics, economics and management courses, these courses aim to examine how climate change affects politics and economics, how politics, public policy, economics shifts to respond to climate change, as well as how ESG policies affect the operations of various organisations

  • International development, territory and resource politics - these types of courses aim to look at how these factors affect a region, and how various methods can be applied to mitigate unstable or precarious situations

  • Diplomacy - an examination of the various aspects of managing international relations, interaction with multinational and international organisations, etc

Overall, there is a rich variety of different masters you could take, which will also look at other fields adjacent to your study to give you a more in breadth understanding.

I always look at the undergrad studies as an opportunity to cover all bases in your sector, to find out what parts interest you the most, and then the Master’s is the chance to pursue this further!
