What does an interviewer want to hear from a candidate?

Before an interview, I think we all had one question in mind: what does the interviewer want to hear from me? It is only natural for a candidate to try to predict and satisfy an interviewer’s wishes. When an interviewer asks questions to an applicant, they are typically looking for responses that demonstrate several key qualities and competencies. Here’s what they often want to hear:

1. Qualifications and Skills

  • Relevant Experience: They want to hear about your past experiences that are directly applicable to the job you’re applying for.
  • Technical Skills: Specific skills that are relevant to the role, including software, tools, or methodologies.
  • Soft Skills: Communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and other interpersonal skills.

2. Cultural Fit

  • Alignment with Company Values: Understanding and alignment with the company’s mission, values, and culture.
  • Team Fit: Ability to work well with others and contribute positively to the team dynamics.

3. Motivation and Enthusiasm

  • Genuine Interest: A clear interest in the role and the company.
  • Passion for the Industry: Demonstrating a passion for the field or industry the company operates in.

4. Problem-Solving Ability

  • Examples of Problem-Solving: Specific examples from your past where you successfully addressed and resolved challenges.
  • Critical Thinking: Ability to think critically and analytically.

5. Adaptability and Learning Agility

  • Openness to Change: Willingness to adapt to new situations and challenges.
  • Continuous Learning: Enthusiasm for personal and professional growth.

6. Achievements and Impact

  • Measurable Success: Concrete examples of achievements and the impact you made in your previous roles.
  • Results-Oriented: Focus on results and how you contributed to the success of previous projects or teams.

7. Communication Skills

  • Clarity and Conciseness: Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Listening Skills: Demonstrating good listening skills and the ability to engage in meaningful dialogue.

8. Professionalism and Reliability

  • Dependability: Examples that show you are reliable and can be counted on.
  • Work Ethic: Strong work ethic and commitment to delivering high-quality work.

How to Address These Points:

  • Research: Understand the company, its culture, and the specific requirements of the role.
  • Prepare Stories: Have a few stories ready that highlight your skills, achievements, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ask Questions: Show your interest in the role and company by asking insightful questions.
  • Be Authentic: Be yourself and let your genuine interest and personality shine through.

By focusing on these areas, you can tailor your responses to what interviewers are looking for, increasing your chances of making a positive impression.

It’s so important to cover all these points. My university always encourages the Star approach when implementing examples. Situation, task, action and result.

That’s super insightful! I totally get the importance of being well-prepared for an interview. I’m curious, though—how do you balance being authentic while also trying to match what you think the interviewer wants to hear? It seems like it could be easy to come off as insincere if you’re trying too hard to fit a mold. What are your thoughts on that?

Welp, I think that if the job really fits your interests, then what you are saying is automatically genuine and what comes out of your mouth is what the interviewer wants to hear!!

I think that it is really important researching the firm befirehand - is it a corporate firm with a dull atmosphere that wants very professional individuals? Or is it a more relaxed firm that puts more emphasis on the personal qualities of individuals? Keep that in mind during an interview and try ti present yourself as the ideal candidate for the firm who is the right fit (but don’t forget to still be authentic!!)
