After a U.S. presidential candidate is elected, several steps take place before they officially assume office:
Certification of Results:
- Each state certifies its election results.
- Electoral College members (electors) are chosen based on these results.
Electoral College Vote: - In December, electors from each state meet to formally vote for president and vice president based on the state’s popular vote.
- The results are sent to Congress.
Congressional Certification: - On January 6, Congress convenes to count and certify the Electoral College votes.
Transition Period: - Between election and inauguration, the president-elect forms their administration.
- They appoint cabinet members, advisors, and other officials.
Inauguration: - The president-elect is sworn in on January 20 at the U.S. Capitol.
- This marks the official beginning of their term as president.
During this process, the sitting president remains in office until the new president takes the oath.
