Why is it important that students run for society committee positions?

UK universities offer a whole host of different societies and with that comes the committee. Committees provide a variety of roles including EDI, President, Treasurer, Social secretaries, Social media secretaries and kit secretaries as well as much more. These roles allow students to stand out on their CV and enable them to accrue a wide range of skills. :

Leadership Development: Serving on a committee provides valuable opportunities to develop leadership skills such as decision-making, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. These skills are highly transferable and can benefit students in their academic, personal, and professional lives.

Networking Opportunities: Committee positions allow students to network with fellow members, faculty advisors, alumni, and professionals in their field of interest. Building relationships through societies can lead to mentorship opportunities, internships, job offers, and valuable connections within their industry.

Personal Growth: Taking on a committee role can help students develop personally by stepping out of their comfort zones, taking on responsibilities, and gaining confidence in their abilities. It also provides opportunities for self-discovery and learning about one’s strengths and areas for growth.

CV development: Committee positions demonstrate to future employers that students are proactive, responsible, and committed individuals who are willing to go above and beyond their academic requirements. They can also highlight relevant skills and experiences that align with their career goals.

Contributing to the Community: Serving on a society committee allows students to make a positive impact on their university community by organizing events, workshops, and initiatives that benefit their peers. It provides a platform for students to share their passions, interests, and expertise with others.

Learning Experience: Being part of a society committee offers hands-on experience in event planning, budget management, marketing, and other practical skills that are valuable in many professional fields. It provides a real-world context for applying theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom.

Recognition and Achievement: Committee positions often come with opportunities for recognition and achievement, such as awards, certificates, or leadership roles within the society. These accolades can enhance a student’s resume and demonstrate their commitment to extracurricular involvement.

Taking on committee positions in societies offers university students a unique opportunity for personal and professional development, networking, and making a positive impact on their campus community. It can be a rewarding experience that enhances their university experience and prepares them for future success.

Agree! I used to be a committee member for my university’s volleyball club. Mentioned it at my placement interview, and got a lot of positive feedback afterwards because of it (and the placement too!)
