Why Studying Abroad in the US Has Been a Game-Changer for Me as an English Lit Student

Studying abroad was always something I wanted to do, but I never expected to find myself in Texas! I got a lot of questions as to why I chose America to study English, but I want to let you know why it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and why every English Literature student should consider studying abroad as part of their degree.

New Literary Perspectives
I realised how diverse American literature is, especially in Texas. I’ve been able to explore genres and authors I might not have come across here in the UK. From Southern Gothic to Mexican-American writers, the literature here offers a unique lens on identity, migration, and the complexities of the American South. Reading these works in the place where they were written adds a whole new layer of understanding.

Building Global Connections
One of the most exciting parts of studying abroad was been meeting people from all over the world. I attended the University of Texas at Austin, which was incredibly diverse, with students from across the U.S. and international students like me. I’ve found that having different perspectives in class enriches discussions. These new friendships have made me realise how literature connects us across borders.

Independence and a Go-Getter attitude
Moving 5000 miles across the world has pushed me out of my comfort zone and immersed me into new experiences I couldn’t imagine Navigating life in an entirely new country, adapting to different academic expectations, and experiencing the idiosyncrasies of Texan life has enriched me beyond belief. Studying abroad has taught me how to manage my time better and be open to new experiences—skills that will serve me well long after I graduate.

Outside the Classroom
Lastly, The United States itself is such an exciting and vast place to explore. From the vibrant city of Austin and outward to the East Coast, the West Coast and the Deep South. there’s always something to do. The diversity of language, food and experience is beyond belief!

Studying abroad in Texas has broadened my understanding of literature, culture, and myself. If you’re thinking about studying abroad as an English Literature student, I can’t recommend it enough. Whether it’s Texas or anywhere else, the experience will change how you see the world and deepen your connection to the stories we study.

I’m American and have never even been to Texas, but it’s still good to hear that you had a fun time! Southern Gothic is super interesting, but I don’t know much about it! Could you expand on what kind of common themes you saw in that literature?

That sounds so amazing! I can totally relate to the excitement of studying abroad. there is a gothic book called Mexican gothic by a canadian-mexican author and its SO good! idk if this is any similar to what youve come across but i recommend it

Studying abroad sounds like such an amazing adventure! you think there are particular experiences or connections you made that you wouldn’t have had if you stayed in the UK?
