Why the Civil Service is a great career for STEM students

Many people are under the impression that a career in the civil service is fit for politics, economics, international relations, etc, students. However, there are many reasons why a career in the civil service is just as suited to someone with a background in STEM.

Given developments in technology, particularly AI, the government is looking to take increasingly proactive measures to safeguard the use and applications of different technologies. As such, through various civil service agencies such as Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, UK Health Security Agency, etc, strong and diverse teams of scientists are always required, hence providing a range of opportunities. Your knowledge will be crucial in the development of accurate targeted policy to address various issues.

Not only will you be able to directly apply what you have learned, it will be for the advancement of society, not for profit. By directly applying your skills, you can be sure that there isn’t the chance that your work will only be for profit, especially at the expense of safety.

Application of data driven, mathematical and statistical methods provide accurate data and insights to better guide government and public policy. This isn’t just for data scientists, mathematicians and statisticians, but also for others whose STEM degrees involve a data component, for example physicists or medical lab scientists, as they would also be applying statistical methods.

Should you wish to leave the civil service and advance your career in the private sector, NGO, etc, you will still have gained great skills which will be valued by employers. The civil service requires a rigorous application of skills which necessitates the absolute need for accuracy, confidentiality and forward thinking. This rigorousness will be very useful in any other job.

Overall, there are many reasons why a career in the civil service is absolutely worthwhile if your background is in STEM. It is not a widely known option for STEM students, but maybe that should change.
