Antisemitism complaints by doctors surge

Complaints of antisemitic abuse against Jewish doctors have surged following the October 7 attacks and the Israel-Gaza war, according to records from the General Medical Council (GMC). One London-based physician reported experiencing a vicious antisemitic outburst from a colleague shortly after the attacks. This increase in complaints reflects a broader trend of rising religious hate crimes in the UK since the conflict. The GMC is investigating serious concerns and pledges to take action where necessary. While eight complaints were received about antisemitism by doctors at the beginning of 2023, 60 medical professionals were reported for alleged antisemitic conduct or remarks against colleagues in the four months after the Hamas attacks. Of these, 22 are currently under investigation.

It’s awful that healthcare professionals are experiencing such discrimination, especially in their workplace. I hope the General Medical Council takes decisive action to address these serious concerns and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all medical professionals.
