If you find yourself thinking that you’d want to be a person who helps to produce the next bestseller, here are some things you can do to learn more about the industry and even enhance your chances of landing a job!
-
Make sure to follow all of the big publiahing houses on Twitter. Twitter is the most important social media for the book publishing world. Not only you could find out information about current popular books, but also see job advertisement, open events, information about author talks, and even career tips!
-
Do your research and try to land a placement with one of the book publishing houses. Many of them provide short-term work placements (from 2 weeks to 3 months) that you could fit around your studies. This would provide you with the best knowledge of different departments and give you an idea which ones you’d like to work in.
-
Know the current book market. From the most popular authors to the current bestsellers, you’d be expected to know current trends. In general, whatever industry you want to work in, when you reach the interview stage, recruiters want to see that you’ve done your research about both the company you’re applying for, and the current market.
-
Watch some ‘a day in life’ or book content on YouTube. Starting from book reviews and finishing at employees recording their typical day in life working at the publishing house, it could all enhance your knowledge of the industry!
These are just a few useful things you could do to get a better understanding of the industry. Even though the industry is highly competitive, by following the above tips (or even doing more) can help you to stand out from the pool of candidates!
Always remember, even if you don’t have a lot of experience, recruiters would still consider your application. They may even prefer a person who’s passionate about their industry, than a person with just good grades and some experience but who doesn’t know anything about the publishing world.
