Can Med Schools Come to the Rescue of the NHS?

The NHS is currently grappling with a severe staffing crisis, operating with 154,000 fewer full-time staff than needed in 2021-2022, according to the NHS Workforce Plan.

If current trends persist, the shortage could escalate to 360,000 staff by 2036-2037. The AIMS study, conducted among 10,486 medical students in the UK, unveiled a concerning trend late last year.

One in three students expressed intentions to emigrate for medical practice, while nearly 3% considered leaving the profession entirely. Factors driving this exodus include better pay, work-life balance, and dissatisfaction with NHS prospects, with around 60% of surveyed students expressing discontent.
