Effective treatment for rare sight-threatening infection

A recent study published in Ophthalmology has revealed the effectiveness and safety of a novel drug candidate for treating Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK), a rare and painful eye infection that can lead to sight loss, particularly among contact lens wearers. The study, led by Professor John Dart of UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, examined a treatment using low concentration polihexanide (PHMB 0.02%), which was originally introduced in the 1990s but lacked a standardised treatment protocol.

Do you think the findings of this study could impact the way this condition is treated and prevented in the future?

This study could bring great improvements in treatment and prevention. Let’s hope it leads to better eye health for many
