Warning over antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea cases

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is raising concerns about a rise in antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea cases in England. Between June 2022 and May 2024, 15 cases were identified that were resistant to ceftriaxone, the primary antibiotic used for treatment. This marks a significant increase compared to the nine cases found before 2022. Although the number of cases is small, experts emphasize the need for a strong response to prevent the spread and maintain gonorrhoea as a treatable infection. Regular testing and condom use are advised for protection.
