Emily Katy: 'Finding out I was autistic saved my life"

Emily Katy, now 22, shares her journey of struggling with anxiety and panic attacks since age 13, leading to a suicide attempt at 16 and subsequent hospitalization. Despite her difficulties, she excelled academically but felt like an outsider due to undiagnosed autism.

After a misdiagnosis and struggles with mental health services, Emily finally received an autism diagnosis at 16, which provided clarity and relief. Through advocacy and writing, Emily aims to support neurodivergent individuals and raise awareness about the challenges they face. She became a mental health nurse to help others like herself and hopes her story will encourage conversations about understanding autism in the mental health system.

She turned it around so well! Many people would become discouraged, or even find it only as something negative, but she’s making a great job raising awareness about autism instead. What an inspirational story
