Fancy being a digital nomad?

Now that working from anywhere is really a thing, thanks to technology and a change in attitudes due to Covid (remember that?), it’s tempting to think the the digital nomad lifestyle promoted by many influencers on TikTok and Instagram could be just what you want.

This article by someone who tried it for a year lifts the curtain on what it’s really like (for her, at least).

I guess it probably depends on the nature of your job, but the author’s experience here sounds … not great. Some things that come to my mind when I think about the life of a digital nomad (all negative) are:

  • I need a big screen (I have 2 x 30" monitors running off my laptop in my office)
  • I can’t work in a noisy environment and I hate wearing headphones
  • I need lots of coffee (morning) and tea (afternoon) - could get expensive!
  • I need to be able to leave my desk and walk around when I’m thinking - not gonna leave my MacBook while I do that!
  • I like to see people I know to have a chat, maybe once a day maybe less - being somewhere new all the time might not be compatible with that

Only positive thing I can think of is being in a time zone a few hours west of all those annoying people who pester you with messages, calls and emails - by the time it’s early evening, they’ll all be asleep, leaving the evening peaceful and quiet!

An eye-opening reality check on the digital nomad lifestyle. It’s not all glamorous as it seems :joy:
