The realisations of starting uni

Did anyone else not fully understand the prospect of uni?, in the sense that when you go to uni you need to take things to live. I may have been fairly naive because I only thought I had to take deccorations, clothes and stationary. I had the mentality that uni packing was like paing to go on holiday. Thank god that my parents where aware on getting me fully ready with cleaning products, kitchen items food and bedding. I was so blind to the reality that am going to live at uni not just study. In the end, I felt like I was miving with a small house. The important thing is to take the necessities, but also to take deccorations and items that will make you feel like home. Decorate your room to make it feel homely, because sometimes you need the comfort of being in a space that feels like yours. Remember settling can be challenging but a cozy bedroom can help long way.

Love this post, @Smecia13 especially where you said you’d thought that uni packing was like packing to go on holiday! :joy:

Your point about needing a homely room is totally right - we all need a safe space to retreat into.

Welcome!

I agree but I have to say, I was the opposite, I am a chronical overthinker and meticulous planner so I greatly overpacked. I eventually stumbled onto the idea of minimalism and its benefits to your mental health which lead me to get rid of most of the things I don’t value. Currently, I have maybe 4 or 5 duffel bags worth of stuff I need to survive as a student, its great when moving, I do still have some sentimental stuff I can never get rid of. You don’t have to be this extreme but also don’t stress it, I have to remind myself sometimes that if I forgot something then I can just grab stuff once I get to the accommodation, all I need to do is make one shopping trip.

i applied late in clearing and got my accomodation 2 days before move in day so i just packed what id need and then if i needed anything extra i just had the mentality id find away to either not need it or to get it. the trick is to not stress, the more you stress the worse it gets moving in which then means more stress

Hi @Zarg, great to see your first post in the community. Lots of my friends were in the same position but unfortunately weren’t able to secure accommodation in the short time, they did eventually find a place about a month later so not too bad but they did miss out on the freshers events. I agree, stressing doesn’t help, unplanned things happen in life and decisions change so stressing about what’s not under your control doesn’t help anyone. Making to make a couple trips back home to grab anything you forgot the first time around isn’t a huge deal and is just part of that student experience.
