Genetic ghosts suggest Covid’s market origins

A team of scientists has concluded that it is “beyond reasonable doubt” that the Covid-19 pandemic originated from infected animals sold at a market, rather than from a laboratory leak. After analyzing samples collected from Wuhan’s Huanan Seafood Market in January 2020, they identified animals like raccoon dogs, civets, and bamboo rats as potential sources. Although their study shows Covid virus and animal genetic material in the same locations, providing strong evidence of the market’s role, it cannot definitively prove that the animals were the source of infection.
