How can law firms retain clients?

Considering there are so many law firms out there, clients are free to choose whichever seems to suit their needs. If they believe that a firm is not doing a good job for them, they can just switch to another one. That really sounds tough from a business perspective, as clients are your primary source of revenue after all. Thus, client retention is one of the biggest challenges that the legal sector faces. But what can law firms do to make the clients stay?

  • Build relationships: It is of utmost importance to not only offer legal advice, but also to network with clients and get to know them on a personal level. The majority of law firms can solve your legal issues, but few will actually take some extra steps to break down the lawyer-client barrier. After all, lawyers are humans too and they need to display that!

  • Be authentic: From my experience, I can firmly say that many lawyers sound the same and behave in the same way. Their attitude is very artificial and even though they are good law practitioners, it does not mean that it is very enjoyable to speak with them. However, they are plenty of law firms that promote being yourself. I cannot stress how important this is for client retention as nobody likes speaking with a robot. If a client sees that you are genuine, they will not only like the services that you provide, but will also like you as a person;

  • Networking: Again, doing a good job for your client during work hours is great, but connecting with clients outside your schedule should be part of the job. Law firm should always target inviting clients to networking and informative events. That way, you can chat with your client in an informal setting about stuff that is not related to their legal matters and you can even become friends!
