How can you explain legal rules to someone wihtout any legal knowledge?

Let’s be real: most people that do not practise the law have little to no idea about the law. And that is fine, that is why lawyers exist! Thus, how can we, people with legal knowledge, explain to unfamiliar people legal concepts? I have tried in the past and I was not the best at it, but I found some tips that made it easier:

  • Use Simple Language: Avoid legal jargon and complex terminology. Use everyday language that is easy to understand.
  • Start with Basics: Begin with a clear and concise definition of the rule and explain its purpose. Outline the basic idea before delving into details.
  • Use Analogies and Examples: Relate the rule to familiar situations or use analogies to make the concept more relatable and easier to grasp.
  • Break Down Complex Concepts: Divide complicated rules into smaller, more manageable parts, explaining each part step by step.
  • Encourage Questions: Allow the person to ask questions and provide answers to clarify any confusion. This interaction can help reinforce their understanding.
  • Be Patient and Approachable: Show patience and be open to re-explaining concepts if necessary. A friendly approach can make the learning process more comfortable.
  • Visual Aids: Use diagrams, charts, or other visual aids to illustrate the rule and how it applies. Visuals can often make abstract ideas more concrete.
  • Summarize Key Points: At the end of the explanation, recap the main points to reinforce understanding.

This is a really good guide and important for both junior lawyers and experienced lawyers, thanks for sharing!

That’s really helpful advice! It’s so important to make legal concepts accessible to everyone. Do you have any specific analogies or examples that you find especially effective when explaining complex legal rules to people who aren’t familiar with the law?

To explain complex legal rules, I often use the analogy of a pizza order to illustrate contract law: Ordering a pizza involves making an offer (you specify the toppings), the pizzeria accepting the offer (they agree to make and deliver the pizza), and consideration (you pay money, and they deliver the pizza). If they deliver a pizza with the wrong toppings or don’t deliver at all, they’ve breached the contract, similar to how legal contracts work in broader contexts. This simple scenario helps people understand the basic principles of offer, acceptance, and consideration in contract law.
