As an international student from Singapore, there were a lot of things I didn’t expect coming here to London, for example how homesick I would be and the vast difference in weather. If you have any questions about how best to adapt to student life here in London, please feel free to ask or share your own experiences!
You’ll find the culture and teaching style pretty different from back home, but that’s part of the fun. The local accent and slang might be tricky at first, but you’ll get the hang of it. Keep an open mind, and you’re set for an amazing time!
I’m afraid weather in the UK is often a big shock to international students - and there’s nothing we can do about it!
Universities in the UK have been hosting international students for many years now, and there are great systems in place to ensure that young people new to the UK have access to the support they need to adapt and thrive here. Check out what the Student Union and International Office at your university can do for you, and also check out the UK Council for International Student Affairs. UKCISA also offer opportunities to become an International Student Ambassador, potentially a great career-boosting move:
The #WeAreInternational Student Ambassador programme is UKCISA’s student network of global future leaders. This is an education policy and leadership development scheme for exceptional individuals from around the world who are currently studying in the UK. Our vision for the programme is to empower international students to be key partners in shaping a quality student experience, using their knowledge and first-hand experience of studying in the UK to influence policy, lead the #WeAreInternational campaign and develop an inclusive global student community. Our student ambassadors will be equipped with policy knowledge and leadership skills to lead change, and forge an exciting network of global student leaders.
