How to Make Time to Read for Pleasure When You’re Doing a Reading-Heavy Degree

Studying a reading-heavy degree can make the idea of picking up a book for fun feel daunting—but it’s not impossible. Reading for pleasure can help you rediscover your love of stories, refresh your mind, and even improve your academic focus. Here’s how to fit it into your busy schedule:

Start Small

You don’t need to tackle a 500-page novel. Short stories, essays, or poetry collections can be perfect for fitting in quick, enjoyable reads during breaks.

Schedule It Like Self-Care

Treat pleasure reading as a way to relax, like going for a walk or watching a show. Set aside 15–30 minutes before bed or during lunch to dive into something that isn’t on your syllabus.

Choose a Different Genre

Switch things up by reading something unrelated to your coursework. If you study literary classics, try contemporary fiction, graphic novels, or non-fiction to keep things fresh and engaging.

Listen to Audiobooks

If sitting down with a book feels too time-consuming, audiobooks are a great way to enjoy stories on the go. Listen during commutes, workouts, or while doing chores.

Embrace “Slow Reading”

It’s okay if you don’t finish a book in one sitting. Allow yourself to read at your own pace without pressure, even if it takes weeks to finish a single novel.

Create a To-Read List

Having a list of books you’re excited about can motivate you to find time to read. Keep it handy and reward yourself by crossing off titles when you finish them.

Join a Casual Book Club

If you need accountability, join or form a relaxed book club with friends. This way, pleasure reading becomes social and something you look forward to regularly.

Balancing academic and personal reading might seem challenging, but carving out small moments for books you love can reignite your passion for stories and give you a much-needed mental break. After all, even avid readers deserve to read for fun!

Great tips! I hope I could see this forum when I was in year one and burnt out by loads of readings! I have thought about joining a book club but I don’t know how could that be done? Do you have any further suggestions about that?
