How to maximise your use of LinkedIn

Maximizing LinkedIn for your career prospects involves building a strong, professional online presence and actively engaging with your network. Here’s a guide on how to effectively use LinkedIn:

Optimize Your Profile

  • Professional Headshot: Use a high-quality, professional photo. Profiles with photos get more views.
  • Compelling Headline: Your headline is one of the first things people see. Use it to communicate your current role, interests, or career goals (e.g., “Politics & International Relations Student | Aspiring Policy Analyst”).
  • Customized URL: Edit your LinkedIn URL to include your name, making it easier for others to find you.
  • Summary (About Section): Write a concise summary that highlights your key skills, experiences, and goals. Include keywords relevant to your industry to make your profile more searchable.
  • Detailed Experience Section: List your work experience, internships, and volunteer roles. For each position, use bullet points to explain your responsibilities, key achievements, and the skills you’ve gained.
  • Skills and Endorsements: Add relevant skills to your profile and ask connections to endorse them. Focus on the top skills that align with your career aspirations.
  • Education and Certifications: Include your degrees and any certifications you’ve obtained. If you’re currently studying, mention relevant coursework, projects, or achievements.
  • Recommendations: Request recommendations from colleagues, professors, or supervisors to add credibility to your profile.

Expand and Nurture Your Network

  • Connect with Purpose: When sending connection requests, personalize your message, especially if you don’t know the person well. Mention common interests, mutual connections, or why you’d like to connect.
  • Follow Industry Leaders: Follow influencers, thought leaders, and organizations in your field. Their posts can keep you updated on industry trends and provide opportunities for engagement.
  • Engage Regularly: Comment on posts, share interesting articles, and congratulate people on their achievements. Regular interaction helps you stay visible to your network.
  • Join Groups: Participate in LinkedIn groups related to your field. These are great for networking, learning, and finding job opportunities.
  • Attend Events: LinkedIn often hosts virtual events and webinars. Attending these can help you learn from experts and network with professionals.

Content Creation and Sharing

  • Share Articles and Insights: Regularly post content relevant to your industry, whether it’s an interesting article, a report, or your own thoughts on current events. This positions you as an informed and active participant in your field.
  • Write Articles on LinkedIn: Publishing long-form articles on topics related to your expertise can demonstrate thought leadership and attract attention from recruiters and professionals in your field.
  • Showcase Projects: Use the “Featured” section to display important projects, presentations, or papers. This gives recruiters a direct look at your work and achievements.

Job Search Features

  • Open to Work: Use the “Open to Work” feature to let recruiters know you’re open to job opportunities. You can control who sees this information (e.g., only recruiters).
  • Job Alerts: Set up job alerts for roles that interest you. LinkedIn will notify you when relevant jobs are posted.
  • Apply Directly: LinkedIn allows you to apply for many jobs directly through the platform. Make sure your profile is polished, as some employers will use it in lieu of a CV.
  • Follow Companies: Follow companies you’re interested in to stay updated on their job openings, news, and company culture.

Leverage LinkedIn Learning

  • Skill Development: LinkedIn Learning offers courses on a wide range of topics. Completing courses in your field can enhance your profile and show that you’re committed to continuous learning.
  • Certifications: After completing courses, add the certifications to your profile. This signals your expertise in particular areas to potential employers.

Tailor Your Profile for Specific Roles

  • Keywords: Use keywords that match job descriptions of roles you’re interested in. Recruiters often search for specific terms when looking for candidates.
  • Targeted Experience: Highlight experience that aligns with the types of positions you’re seeking. If you’re aiming for a specific field (like public policy or international development), tailor your experience and skills to reflect that.

Be Proactive in Reaching Out

  • Informational Interviews: Use LinkedIn to reach out to people in roles or industries you’re interested in and request informational interviews. This helps build your network and gather insights on career paths.
  • Follow-Up After Events: If you meet someone at a networking event, send them a connection request soon after with a personal note to keep the connection warm.

Track Your Analytics

  • Profile Views: Monitor who views your profile. This can give you insights into which industries or companies are showing interest in your profile.
  • Post Engagement: Track how your posts perform in terms of views and engagement. This can help you tailor future content to your audience.

I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface with LinkedIn so far, but I definitely want to start using it more actively. Just curious—what type of content do you think is best for sharing or writing about as a student?

Its best to focus on areas that you have interests in, for example if you were seeking to get into journalism you could share a story or an example of work you have completed with student media.
