Junior doctors in England are set to strike for five days from February 24 to 28 over a dispute regarding pay with the government. The British Medical Association (BMA) seeks a 35% pay increase, a proposal previously turned down by ministers. As a result, routine hospital services may face disruptions or cancellations.
While the government aims to reach a “reasonable solution” and is open to enhancing the pay offer, talks in late 2023 concluded without an agreement. The BMA emphasises the need for a “credible offer” to avert the impending strike. The proposed pay increase aims to offset below-inflation rises since 2008. Health Secretary Victoria Atkins criticizes the strike, expressing concern about its impact on the NHS and suggesting it undermines constructive dialogue. This will mark the 10th strike by junior doctors since March 2023, following a six-day strike in January. The BMA is also considering further industrial action.
