King Charles may step back from duties as Head of State and Monarch

Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that King Charles III has been diagnosed with Cancer.

Following a procedure for a benign prostate enlargement a separate issue of concern was identified which doctors later diagnosed as cancer.

Whilst the severity of the diagnosis hasn’t been confirmed the King has returned to London from Sandringham to commence treatment. The King has chosen to make this diagnosis public in order to reduce speculation and to aid public understanding for those affected by cancer across the world.

ITV has reported that the King will step back from duties as Head of State and Monarch whilst receiving treatment and it is expected that another senior Royal Family member will carry out his duties and responsibilities.

This is an interesting story for politics students as it highlights how Constitutional Monarchies operate but also the strength of the uncodified nature of the UK constitution due to its flexibility and how it can quickly adapt to challenges and problems that arise

It’s definitely an interesting situation for anyone majoring in politics. A swift and flawless work from the King’s communications team for sure. Also, being an international student, found it interesting to see the impact it would have on King’s duties
