King’s Speech lays out plans for a smokefree future

In the King’s Speech, King Charles III announced that the UK Government will introduce legislation to gradually raise the legal age for purchasing tobacco, effectively prohibiting sales to those born after January 1, 2009. This is part of a broader effort to create a smoke-free generation and reduce smoking-related cancer cases. Public support for this measure is high, with 73% of adults in favour. The UK Government has initiated a public consultation on these smoking and vaping measures, with plans to implement them in 2024. While initially applicable to England and Wales, the government is open to supporting other devolved nations in implementing similar measures. Cancer Research UK and other organisations will continue to push for the successful implementation of this legislation.
