I had a smile on my face when I heard this news this morning - Laura Kenny sounded so happy about what she had achieved and experienced and relieved that she no longer had to choose between family and cycling.
Very few athletes are able to leave their sport on their terms, at peace with their decision, knowing they’ve achieved everything that they set out to do and more and can now move on to the next stage of their life.
There will be a lot of athletes right now in Olympic sports who haven’t been selected for the games in Paris, painfully trying to work out what they should do. They may have just missed the cut or been injured and then another group will go to the Games and want to hang on to do it all again for another 4 years but be torn as to whether it’s the right thing to do.
Athletes from all sports at all levels find knowing when to stop such a hard choice to make.
But life after sport is absolutely as amazing as life in it!
