Matcha green tea may improve sleep, social functioning in older adults

Japanese researchers studied the cognitive benefits of matcha green tea in older adults but found mixed results. While matcha did not improve memory or broader cognitive functions, it did show benefits for social cognition and sleep in participants with mild cognitive decline. The study involved 99 participants aged 60-85, who were split into matcha and placebo groups. Matcha contains antioxidants, theanine, and catechins, which may help with relaxation and reducing inflammation, but the study did not find strong evidence of matcha improving overall cognitive health.

Do you think incorporating matcha green tea into your routine could potentially benefit your social cognition or sleep? Why or why not?

That’s really interesting! I’ve always heard that matcha can help with energy and focus, but I didn’t know it might improve social cognition and sleep in older adults too. Do you think these findings mean matcha could be helpful for younger people who want to boost their sleep and social skills, or is it mainly for older adults with cognitive decline?
