After watching enough TV shows, many high-school students romanticise student years and go to university in the hope that their lives will change, they will make a lot of friends, spend all their time partying and having fun. But! What exactly guarantees you a university is:
Stress. Lack of sleep during exams. A lot of worries about essays, seminars, resits, and deadlines.
So, it’s time to bust some myths about studying at University:
Studying at univerity is the best time of your life.
This phrase can be heard from the older generation, which is nostalgic for the bygone youth. After a while, the bad is forgotten (sleepless nights, panic before the exam, etc.) and only good memories remain. So definitely not the best idea to trust those ‘words of wisdom’.
Worry-free student life.
We all love this myth that anyone can skip homework and lectures and still graduate with honours. But mark my words, you will regret skipping those, especially while sitting an exam. Not to mention that most of the lecturers form their opinion about students based on their attendance activity during the semester.
The university will open the door to adulthood.
This is probably the most popular myth. Modern education is built in such a way that you get most of the knowledge yourself, in other words, you will have to learn in practice or already at work. The university will only teach you how to cope with stress and find solutions in critical situations.
I will graduate from the university and immediately go to work in my specialty.
Oh, this myth of getting a perfect job straight after receiving a diploma in a specialty that brings pleasure and where good money is paid. Probably, this ideal place exists somewhere, but not for everyone and not everywhere. It is almost never possible to find a job right away, as companies are looking for candidates with experience for well-paying positions, which cuts off the chances for most students (except for some of the lucky ones who were able to secure an internship/placement).
Living in dorms is always fun.
American comedies often show life in dorms as eternal fun: dancing till you drop and drinking non-stop. Unfortunately, it’s not always like that. Many residents will already be in established friendship groups, or will simply be busy studying or working. Parties certainly happen, but definitely not so often. This is without taking into account those nights when you’re trying to get some sleep before an exam, but party in the next room is preventing you from getting any rest. Not the funniest experience for sure
Diploma is the key to success.
Knowledge is your key to success, and a diploma is just a piece of paper confirming its presence. Even a diploma can be useless if you do not learn skills that are in demand among employers.
If you didn’t study well at school, you won’t be able to study at university.
It depends on the individual abilities of the student. But aslo, everyone has ups and downs. Many, on the contrary, prefer studying at university, which gives more freedom of action and more time for self-studies. Of course, this also often leads to procrastination (tips on how to beat procrastination can be found here)
